As a world power, the United States retains unmatched reservoirs of strength, and no other nation seems likely to replace it at the pinnacle of the world heap any time soon. Yet it’s also true that the US is in relative decline and that it faces hard choices in several areas abroad, not least in Asia. How should we judge Barack Obama¹s foreign policy as he approaches the midpoint of his second term? And how does he compare to his predecessors in his approach to the world and to Asia? In this lecture, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Fredrik Logevall places Obama¹s foreign policy in historical context, with particular attention to the enduring legacy of the Wilsonian call to make the world “safe for democracy.”
