SPEAKER • Kirk Wagar was sworn in as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore on September 4, 2013. Previously, Mr. Wagar was managing partner of Wagar Law, a Miami-based law ­rm that focuses on contract and insurance litigation. He has served as a member of the Sub-Saharan Africa Advisory Committee and the advisory committee of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. He was Florida fi­nance chair for President Obama and a trustee of the inaugural committee in 2009 and 2013. Mr. Wagar also served as Florida ­finance chair for the Democratic National Committee for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. He has been a member of the boards of the American Association for Justice, the Florida Justice Association and the National Collegiate Conference Association, which is parent of the National Model United Nations and an NGO of the U.N. Mr. Wagar received a B.A. from Roberts Wesleyan College and a J.D. from the University of Miami.

From the Boardroom to the Darkroom – My journey to becoming a Pro Travel Photographer by Steve Golden, ’06 (AXP-5) Sitting in his managing director’s office in 2009, Steve Golden received a phone call from Lonely Planet that would set him on a road less travelled, changing his career and life forever. Today he is a professional travel photographer and entrepreneur. This talk will take place in the informal space of Steve’s home gallery in Chinatown. Following an enthusiastic story about following one’s passion and making a living doing so will be a hands discussion about how to take better photographs.

Speaker Profiles Steve Golden, ’06 (AXP-5) (Speaker) Steve Golden is a publisher, entrepreneur, writer and photographer. Arriving in Tokyo with $200, he has now been in Asia for 25 years. His first career was in publishing, where we worked with Cambridge University Press and then SAGE Publications as the founder of their Asia-Pacific operation. Steve now runs a photography gallery in Singapore, and is a founding member of The Image Review with The Society of National Geographic Photographers. He has also teamed up with famed photographer Michael Yamashita and Lonely Planet author Nick Ray on a series of photography workshops (http://www.yamashitaauthentic.asia/) in Cambodia and Laos. The MIT Club of Singapore would like to invite you to No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia at the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (CCA). The exhibition has been organized by CCA and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and is a cultural engagement of UBS. The exhibition features more than 16 artworks by eminent artists of the region or addressing the region and is curated by June Yap, one of Singapore’s international acclaimed curators. The Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) is a research center of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), developed with support from the Economic Development Board, Singapore. Under the leadership of Ute Meta Bauer, who joined NTU from MIT to serve as CCA’s Founding Director and Professor at the School of Art, Design and Media, the Centre officially opened in October 2013.

As one of the founders of the Nanyang movement, Liu Kang played a key role in the development of Singapore’s first celebrated and locally conceived artistic style. His large body of artworks express a unique Southeast Asian identity and are distinctive through its use of bright colours and bold outlines. This talk will explore the life and work of this prolific Singaporean artist, from his early beginnings as an artist through to the creation of some of his most well-known paintings. Our speaker for this talk is Durriya Dohadwala, a independent art writer whose articles have been published in print and online magazines and journals. She is a volunteer with Art Outreach and a docent at the Singapore Art Museum, where she guides contemporary and modern Asian art exhibitions. 14. Career Opportunity – Communications Manager, American Association of Singapore

Reporting to the General Manager, the Communications Manager is responsible for leading and developing external communications for the American Association of Singapore (AAS). This includes message development, communications strategy and the day-to-day execution of communications to promote AAS. The Communications Manager will act as Editor for the Singapore American Newspaper (SAN), manage volunteer contributing writers, as well as create the copy and manage the AAS website, collateral, social media, and other external communications as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
§ Support the implementation of communications business plan and define communications objectives
§ Editor for SAN including planning monthly content, writing articles, editing, proofing and fact checking all articles, managing the volunteer writing team and SAN budget
§ Manage the AAS website including content updates and design to ensure its relevance, accuracy and strategic alignment
§ Develop communications campaigns that incorporate social media techniques to generate visibility for AAS and related events
§ Work with graphic designer to manage all external communications and marketing collateral including brochures and publications
§ Ensure consistent messaging and uniformity and adherence to brand standards
§ Track and monitor the success of online initiatives, website and communications (i.e. impressions, reach and influence), and providing reports and analytics
§ Identify new communication strategies to improve on existing communications and outreach with current and potential members

Job Requirements:
§ 3-5 years of progressive experience in marketing or corporate communications, including the support of messaging and communications development for events, outreach and other marketing campaigns
§ 2+ years of experience creating content for and managing social media outlets, including, but not limited to Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook
§ Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills with a keen eye to detail
§ Effective project management and execution skills and the ability to operate under pressure and tight deadlines
§ Solid understanding of marketing and advertising principles and concepts
§ A committed and flexible approach to the job and AAS organization
§ Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
§ Advanced proficiency in MS Office suite
§ Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite a plus
§ Knowledge website editing programs and e-communications software is preferred
§ Bachelor’s degree required
