Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy is pleased to invite DUAL members to their Lunchtime Talk on “Combating Money Laundering in Asia Pacific” by Dr, Muhammad Yusuf, Head of the Indonesia Financial Transaction Reports & Analysis Centre (PPATK). The talk will be chaired by Dr. Eduardo Araral, Assistant Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. PPATK is one of the most important government bodies in Indonesia in tackling corruption issues, together with KPK (Anti Corruption Commission) and others law enforcement agencies. Dr. Yusuf served 26 years in the Indonesian government and began his career as Prosecutor at Ujung Pandang District Prosecution Office on 1988 and became Deputy of High Prosecutor Office of Jakarta for Special Crime in 2007. In 2008, he was requested to be Director of Law and Regulation at PPATK and then in 2011 he was selected by President of the Republic of Indonesia to be head of PPTAK until present.

Criminal acts such as corruption, bribery, and terrorism have symbiotic relationship with money laundering because the criminals have conceal the origin, source, location, allocation or the actual ownership of the assets obtained from such criminal acts. The talk will focus on money laundering. The estimation of the amount available for money-laundering would be within the IMF’s original ‘consensus range’, equivalent to some 2.7 per cent of Global GDP (2.1 – 4 per cent) or US$1.5 trillion. It is realized that the flow of investment (and economic cooperation) between Singapore and Indonesia has been rising significantly in the last decade. This, however, comes to notion that the traffic of remittance either involving legal or illegal transactions has also increased. Therefore both Singapore and Indonesia have share some concerns regarding money laundering, especially within the Asia Pacific Region.
