We’re starting a monthly member feature! Cornellians are doing exciting things in their respective industries and we want to showcase some of our members, so that our community can get to know each other better. If you know a Cornellian worth featuring, please reach out to our VP Memberships Cheryl Sim at email@example.com.
In our first feature, meet Jason Parke (Engineering (Operations Research and Industrial Engineering) ’07). He’s a former banker turned F&B entrepreneur who has taken it into his hands to bring homemade, authentic New York bagels to Singapore. He runs Schmear, a New York delicatessen at Quayside Isle, Sentosa Cove that specialises in serving up homemade, hand-rolled bagels and other New York favourites.
What brought you to Singapore?
I was previously working for J.P. Morgan in New York and had an opportunity to move out here with the company. Was expecting to be here for 2 years or so, but ended up I spending about 5 years with them here in Singapore, then 2 years in tech venture capital. And after that, I opened Schmear in February of last year.
Tell us about Schmear in a sentence, and what got you started with it?
Making food the way it’s supposed to be made — anything we can make in-house we do, from the bagels (of course) to the BBQ sauce to the roast beef to grinding our own beef for our burgers. And what got me started – I couldn’t find a decent bagel in this country, so I took matters into my own hands.
How do you spend your free time?
What free time?? Whenever I can find a few minutes I spend it with my newborn baby, Gabriella (born in Jan) and my wife Emily.
